Northern Lights Tours, Bodo, Northern Norway

Experiencing the Northern Lights means following the conditions – not the clock. We go all-in on making the most of the night, using local knowledge, flexibility and time to give you the best possible chance to witness the magic of the Aurora.

The evening begins in Bodø, where you will be picked up in a comfortable Mercedes van. With a maximum of six guests, you’ll travel in a small group into the countryside, following the weather and Aurora forecasts as the evening unfolds. Your guide knows the roads and landscapes around Bodø and adapts the route to the conditions, taking you wherever the chances of clear skies and Aurora activity are best.

The Northern Lights are never guaranteed, but we do everything we reasonably can to give you the best chance of experiencing them. If conditions around Bodø are not favourable, we go further. Sometimes that means driving deep into the countryside, and if necessary, all the way towards the Swedish border. We also stay out late when conditions are challenging, giving the skies more time to clear and the Aurora more opportunity to appear. We don’t set a fixed turnaround time when there is still a realistic chance of seeing the lights.

The tour is led by a knowledgeable local guide with a deep understanding of the area and the Arctic landscape. Along the way, you will learn about the Northern Lights and the places you pass, while there is also plenty of time to simply enjoy the winter night. Your guide will take high-quality photos during the tour, so you can put the camera away and be fully present when the Aurora appears.

Warm drinks and snacks are included in the tour, and warm gear and headlamps are available if needed. All that is left is to settle in, look up and let the Arctic night unfold.

FAQ

  • Do I need any outdoor experience?

    No proper outdoor experience necessary on this Northern Lights Safari. You will mainly be transported by car, but it might be necessary to hike a little to get to the best places for seeing the Northern Lights.

  • Terrain, distance and elevation

    Depends on the location we visit on the given day, but this is an easy level tour and therefore not very physically demanding.

  • What do I need to bring?

    • Definitely bring a camera!
    • Warm clothes. Dress in wool if you have, to keep warm. Make sure you bring a warm hat, gloves, and a scarf.
    • Warm, sturdy shoes and woolen socks. You’ll be outside for a while and you don’t want to get cold while waiting.
    • A snack and something warm to drink.
    • A little patience. On a Northern Lights Tour it might be necessary to wait a little before the Aurora shows up.

    • The meeting point is in the lobby of Scandic Havet Hotel, conveniently located in the town centre. Please see map above.
      If you need pick up somewhere else in Bodø, please contact us to arrange for an alternate location.

    We need a minimum of 2 participants to run this tour. Maximum group size is 5 people.

  • Can I book if I’m on my own?

    Sure! We need a minimum of 2 participants to run this tour. If you are on your own you can either join a group or pay for two participants.

  • Weather cancellation policy

    The Aurora is very elusive and unfortunately we cannot guarantee that we will see the Northern Lights.

    We will therefore let you know the chances of seeing the Northern Lights before departure. If the chances are very slim we will either change the date of the tour (depending on availability) or give you a 90 % refund.
